Building a digital twin - 3D Street Art
December 2023
The Concept
The former railway line connecting Finsbury Park To Alexander Palace is currently London’s longest nature reserve. Since the train lines were removed it has become both a popular nature walk and due to its surreal feel of nature taking back an area industrialised during Victorian London, it has become a magnet for Street artist to use as a canvas.
Due to the nature of limited space to paint on the parkland walk many of the often large paintings only last a few days before another artist paints over the painting.
The Idea was to ask the artists to produced animated 3D art which can be activated by using web AR, allowing the animations to add to the general surreal atmosphere of the walk as well as giving the art pieces longevity. Most of the artists approached were very excited by the project.
The Design
The first thing thing I did was to create a “Digital Twin” of parts of the walk so I could create the 3D art. The digital twin was produced using an app called “Ploycam”. The app takes a series of images, stitches them together to create a 3D file which was imported into either Gravity Sketch or Shapes XR to start creating a the 3D animation on.
In Gravity Sketch I could create design the 3D models.
